Voice Over Internet Protocol

IP Telephony offers the ability to carry voice over IP-based data networks. It is now one of the fastest growing sectors in Information & Communication Technology. Using IP, both data and voice applications can be converged onto a single network, providing new applications and cost savings. Rather than having two cabling systems for voice and data, IP uses the same infrastructure for both. There are no dedicated lines as they are effectively 'shared'. By using the same packet-orientated protocol (TCP/IP), both voice and data are transmitted at the same time across the same segment of cable as virtual rather than physical channels, obviously with due consideration being paid to the bandwith requirements of the system.
